Frequently Asked Questions
What is adaptive clothing?
Simply put, adaptive clothing is designed to meet the unique needs of disabled people making dressing easier, more comfortable, and more accessible. I usually think of adaptive needs in three main categories: mobility/dexterity, medical access, and sensory comfort.
My approach to adaptation is all about collaboration and creativity. I often use features like snaps, magnets, Velcro, or other thoughtful adjustments to make garments work for each individual. Just as important is communication whether verbal or nonverbal to truly understand what my clients want as well as what they need. Adaptive fashion isn’t one-size-fits-all it’s about honoring each person’s body, style, and story.
Why is adaptive clothing important to you?
In high school, I developed a neurological disorder that changed my life in ways I could have never expected. Suddenly, everyday tasks became challenging, and I often felt isolated while my non-disabled peers went on with experiences I could no longer share. But through that difficult time, I found strength and connection in the disabled community, and I knew I wanted to give something back.
Fashion has always been a passion of mine, and when I discovered adaptive clothing, everything clicked. It combined my love for design with my lived experience, showing me how clothing can do so much more than just express style it can restore confidence, independence, and dignity. Adaptive fashion isn’t just needed… it’s transformative. My goal is to help make fashion more visible, more inclusive, and more accessible for everyone.
Do you do non-adaptive alterations?
Yes! I offer all kinds of alterations and custom work, not just adaptive clothing. While adaptive fashion is my passion and focus, I’m happy to take on any project that I feel confident and comfortable completing
Why don’t you do phone calls?
While I will do phone calls for accessibility reasons or for the comfort of a client, I prefer written communication outside of consultations. This is for a few reasons, but the main reason is I find written communication (text, private message, email) easier to keep track of and it makes it easier for me to refer back to during the tailoring process. I’ve also found that for many of my clients, written communication makes the initial contact less stressful.
How do you price your alterations?
My pricing is based on a combination of base fees and hourly labor. Base fees typically range from $10 to $50, depending on the type and complexity of the alteration. On top of that, I include a $8/hour labor rate for the time and care that goes into each piece.
Please note that as my business grows, my prices may adjust over time. As a disabled small business owner without government assistance, I strive to keep my services fair and accessible while also ensuring that my work remains sustainable.
Do you offer bridal alterations?
Unfortunately, I do not offer bridal alterations at this time. However, I have a list of local seamstresses that I would love to lead you to who might be able to help you!
Do you do trades?
Yes! I’m open to trading services with other local businesses, as long as the value of the exchange is fair for both sides. I also love collaborating with other creatives in the area whether that’s artists, designers, or makers who share a passion for accessibility and inclusion.
Where are you located?
I’m based in Elmira, NY, and operate as a home-based seamstress. For privacy reasons, I only share my exact address once a consultation is scheduled.
While my home workspace is not currently wheelchair accessible, accessibility is very important to me. I’m more than happy to arrange house visits for clients who can’t access my space (within a reasonable distance), ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to collaborate comfortably.
Do you do long distance projects?
Yes, I’m open to long-distance projects! However, they do require a bit more effort and coordination on the client’s end. I strongly encourage having someone available to assist you with measurements and fittings throughout the process.
For these projects, we’ll set up a clear timeline and schedule a few Zoom consultations to make sure everything stays on track. I’ll also provide custom hand-drawn measuring charts so you can take accurate measurements at home.
Please note that long-distance projects aren’t always guaranteed and may come at a higher cost due to the additional time and communication involved as well as shipping costs.
